To step outside politics, look at Tiger Woods.
It’s hard to imagine anyone who more thoroughly destroyed their reputation and credibility than that goof. Ditto, to both points, for Schwarzenegger. Clinton was battered for years by allegations of infidelity and inappropriate behaviour (with good reason, as it turned out). Ergo, it’s not really unfair, by the standards of politics. Matt Gurney in Toronto: I suspect the others will have more to say about this, so I won’t belabour the point, but … I’m not sure Cain is being treated any more unfairly than anyone else.
